Guide for Artists
How illustrators, muralists, fine artists, and commission-based artists can use Onie Studio.
Your Typical Workflow
Commission Inquiry → Quote → Deposit → Work in Progress → Final Payment → Delivery
Step 1: Commission Inquiry
- Create a Client with the person's name and contact info
- Note what they're looking for in the client notes (size, style, subject, timeline)
- Set status to Lead
Step 2: Quoting a Commission
Commissions often involve:
- Base price (by size, complexity, or hours)
- Rush fee (if applicable)
- Commercial licensing (if they're using the artwork commercially)
Create a Quote that itemizes these clearly. Include your revision policy and usage rights in the quote notes.
Step 3: Commission Agreement
Send a Contract before starting any work. Key clauses to include:
- Scope of work (subject, dimensions, medium)
- Number of revisions included
- Usage rights granted
- Refund/cancellation policy
- Payment schedule
Use {{client_name}} and {{business_name}} variables to personalize it automatically.
Step 4: Deposit & Starting Work
- Convert the quote to an Invoice for the deposit (typically 25–50%)
- Don't start work until the deposit is paid
- Create the Session (or "Commission") and link the invoice and contract to it
Step 5: Progress Updates
Use the Client Portal to share work-in-progress updates. Your client can see notes and files you've added to their session without needing to email back and forth.
Step 6: Final Delivery
- Create the final invoice for remaining balance
- Once paid, use File Delivery to share high-resolution files
- If physical delivery is needed, include shipping details in the delivery notes
- Mark the commission as Delivered
Tips for Artists
- Use Tags to categorize commissions by medium (watercolor, digital, oil) or type (portrait, pet, landscape)
- Set up a post-delivery workflow to request a testimonial 1 week after delivery
- Keep your contract templates updated — especially usage rights language
